Arcadia 2018 focuses on the glorious music of JS Bach. An in-depth examination of the mysteries and layers of his ever-popular music and of his enigmatic personality will be undertaken over five events in four days — performed by a select handful of stellar musicians.

A performance of perhaps the greatest ever work for keyboard — the epic Goldberg Variations — by international star pianist Joanna MacGregor is the centrepiece in the concert at St Laurence's Ludlow on Saturday October 6th. Also featured will be Oh Chaconne!, Eleanor Alberga's homage to Bach's famous Chaconne for solo violin, followed by the Chaconne itself.

Bach's music for unaccompanied cello, violin and flute will be woven into a meditation on solitude by the young American baritone Thorvald Blough on Friday evening, October 5th at St Mary Magdalene in Leintwardine, while the final concert on Sunday afternoon, 4pm, October 7th at St Giles Downton will showcase a rare performance of Bach's great musical puzzle, A Musical Offering as well as one of Bach's most appealing cantatas, Ich Habe Genug. Resulting from the uncomfortable meeting of the young King Frederick of Prussia and the ageing composer in 1747, A Musical Offering can now be seen as Bach's great rebuke to worldly power.

The mystery around A Musical Offering will be revealed and unravelled in a special event — a fully illustrated talk at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms on Saturday October 6th at 4:00 pm.

The festival will be launched with the customary free taster event at the Sun Inn in Leintwardine on Thursday October 4th.
